Seat switching simplified

Seat switching simplified

By Bob G., dad of two, Blogger Dad

Today's Dads are carting the children around town just as much as Mom, and it's a pain to move car seats back and forth. My tip is to purchase extra seat(s) that stay in your car. But if you have daughters like me, make sure to tell your wife not to buy the bright neon pink seats!

Similac Advance Infant Formula - Iron Fortified Baby Formula plus DHA & ARA and Lutein - Tips

  • If you choose to feed baby formula from the very beginning, prepare and offer a bottle with 2-3 ounces of formula every 3-4 hours during the first week.
  • If your baby doesn’t drink all of each bottle, she’s likely telling you she’s full.
  • Always test the temperature of heated baby formula before feeding by shaking a few drops on your wrist.
  • Never use a microwave oven to warm formula — this can result in hot spots that can burn your baby.
  • Discard any formula your baby doesn’t finish within one hour after each feeding begins.

Can Babies Taste the Difference Between Formulas?

Typically, babies adapt to the taste of their usual formula and will likely develop a preference to that taste. They may happily drink formula that would be distasteful to you, and refuse formula that would taste better to you. It would not be unusual for your baby to be able to tell the difference in taste among milk-based, soy-based, and hypoallergenic* formulas.

Every baby has her own nutritional needs. The best way to feed your baby is to allow her to take as much baby formula as she wants, but if you’re looking for a guideline, refer to the table below. But remember, these are just averages!

Similac Expert Care Alimentum Hypoallergenic Infant Formula - Baby Formula For Protein Sensitivity

For Food Allergies and Colic Due to Protein Sensitivity

While sensitivity to the protein in both milk-based and soy-based baby formulas is uncommon, it's good to know there is a trusted alternative. If your baby’s digestive system is especially sensitive and requires an extra-gentle baby formula, ask your physician about Similac Expert Care Alimentum Hypoallergenic Formula.

Similac Expert Care Alimentum starts to reduce colic symptoms* in most babies in just 24 hours.† It’s easy for sensitive babies to digest and its protein is broken down into tiny pieces to virtually eliminate allergic reactions in most babies who are allergic to cow’s milk protein.

Signs of Protein Sensitivity

Some babies have long crying spells and cannot be easily comforted. This excessive crying or fussiness is sometimes called colic, and may be due to a sensitivity to the protein. Other symptoms such as severe diarrhea, rashes, and even sleeping problems also can be caused by protein sensitivity.

As with all feeding decisions during the first year, consult your baby's health care professional.

More Choices

For infants and children who are still having food allergy symptoms or have sensitivity to intact protein, protein maldigestion, or fat malabsorption, EleCare® can help provide the nutrients they need. Learn more about EleCare infant formula on EleCare.com.

Similac Go & Grow Milk Based Formula - Balanced Nutrition for Older Babies

Balanced Nutrition for Older Babies, 9 to 24 months

Now that your older baby is eating more table food, it can be hard to tell if she is getting enough nutrition. Data from a food survey* has shown that many older babies aren't getting the recommended amount† of key nutrients necessary for strong growth.

  • 20 percent of older babies aren't getting the recommended amount of calcium.
  • 26 percent aren't getting enough iron.
  • More than 75% aren't getting enough vitamin E.

  • Avoid giving cow's milk until after your baby's first year.
  • You can give your baby egg yolks, but not whites or whole eggs until after her first birthday.
  • If your older baby has developed chewing and swallowing reflexes, feed her pureed or chunkier solids and small, soft bits of easily gummed table foods.
  • Keeping your baby's diet both exciting and nutritious is an important job. Our simple smoothie recipes can help make your job a little bit easier.

Similac Expert Care NeoSure Infant Formula - Baby Formula for Premature Babies - Tips

Formula Feeding Tips

Babies of all sizes need time to learn how to feed outside the womb — especially premature infants. With time, care, and love, you help your baby get the nutrition she needs as you establish healthy feeding habits.

  • Try to establish a routine. Consider using the same chair or space for each feeding. It might take time for your baby to get used to the home environment.
  • Feed your preemie in a quiet room without bright lights to reduce distractions.
  • Allow your premature baby to take as much formula as she wants during each feeding.
  • Smaller, more frequent feedings might be necessary because your premature baby might tire easily.
  • You might need to wake your baby for feedings, as some preemies sleep from 16 to 20 hours per day.
  • If you're bottle feeding, you might want to use the Similac® Slow Flow Nipple, designed to provide a more controlled flow rate.
  • If your baby appears to have colic, a term that describes unexplainable episodes of crying for more than three hours a day, a few days each week by an otherwise healthy baby, talk to your doctor for tips and solutions.
  • Be observant for feeding issues that are not colic, such as listlessness, frequent vomiting, excessive spitting up, or failure to gain weight. Contact your pediatrician if you notice any of these issues.

Can Babies Taste the Difference Between Formulas?

Typically, babies adapt to the taste of their usual formula and will likely develop a preference for that taste. They might happily drink formula that would be distasteful to you, and refuse formula that would taste better to you.

As formula-fed infants mature, their tastes might adapt and develop a preference for the formula they are fed. It would not be unusual for your baby to be able to tell the difference in taste among milk-based, soy-based, and hypoallergenic* formulas.

*Extensively hydrolyzed formula

For excellent growth and development, formula fed premature infants can benefit from a nutrient-enriched discharge formula, such as Similac Expert Care NeoSure, in the first year of life.

* Extensively hydrolyzed formula

Every baby has her own nutritional needs. The best way to feed your baby is to allow her to take as much baby formula as she wants, but if you’re looking for a guideline, refer to the table below. But remember, these are just averages!

Similac Sensitive for Spit-Up Infant Formula - Baby Formula Helps Reduce Spit-up by 54% - StrongMoms™

Helps Reduce Spit-up

If your baby frequently spits up, you can trust Similac Sensitive for Spit-Up to provide the nutrition and help he needs.

Mixing Tips for Similac Sensitive Spit-up

Similac Sensitive for Spit-Up formula contains rice starch. Compared to other Abbott Nutrition powder formulas, Similac Sensitive for Spit-Up powder mixes a little more slowly with water. This is true of any formula that contains rice starch.

Rice starch is what makes Similac Sensitive for Spit-Up look more "grainy" than other Similac formulas. This is not a product defect. The rice starch grains are very small, and should not cause any issue with feeding through a nipple.

Try these tips to help prevent clogged nipples:

  • Mix the powder and water, and then wait two minutes.
  • Gently swirl, or agitate,* the formula in the bottle before feeding.
  • Use a nipple with a larger hole. This will allow for faster formula flow.
  • For easy preparation, try Similac Sensitive for Spit-Up Ready To Feed. Just twist off the cap — no mixing required — and the formula is ready for your baby.

*Avoid vigorous shaking right before feeding — it can cause air bubbles that can lead to gas in your baby.

Talk to your doctor before making changes to your baby's nutrition routine.
